Michael Donavan (The Incredible Hulk (1996 animated series))

Originally, Stan Lee wanted the Hulk to be grey, but due to ink problems, the Hulk's color turned to green. This was explained by saying that the Grey Hulk was the original Hulk to appear when Banner first got hit by the Gamma Bomb. However, due to Banner's repeated use of gamma radiation projectors, the much better known/more common Hulk Green Hulk/Savage Hulk emerged. He also serves as the main protagonist in the second part of the Immortal Hulk comic book series. His rare appearances are also explained by saying that the Grey Hulk persona and the Green Hulk persona are battling in Bruce Banner's sub-conscious. Due to his superior strength, Green Hulk/Savage Hulk, won most of the time thus showing the Savage Hulk persona more often.

Peter David's run altered Banner's pre-Hulk characterization and the nature of the relationship between Banner and the Hulk. David returned to the Stern and Mantlo abuse storyline, expanding the damage caused, and depicting Banner as suffering dissociative identity disorder (DID). David's stories showed that Banner had serious mental problems long before he became the Hulk. David revamped the personality significantly, giving the Grey Hulk the alias "Joe Fixit", and setting him up as a morally ambiguous Las Vegas enforcer and tough guy.

This incarnation represents the personality that can do all the not so nice things that Bruce was too unsure of to do himself. Tricky, manipulative, cunning, shows little thought of others, make up some of his traits. This incarnation can lift approximately 75 tons. This incarnation does possess the "madder he gets, the stronger he gets" ability, but at a much slower rate, since this incarnation has some level of intelligence and reasoning and would not "lose control" as easy as the Savage Hulk incarnation.

  • Height: 6 ft. 6 in.
  • Weight: 900 lbs.
  • Eyes: Gray
  • Hair: Black
  • Intelligence: Normal
  • Transformation: Initially, Bruce would transform into the Grey Hulk at night and then back at dawn. This was subconscious due to the fact that Bruce was ashamed of the dark, not very nice thoughts the Grey Hulk represented and would only let him out at night, in the dark, where he would not be seen. Later, the change was due to will power or stress.
  • Physical Appearance: Interestingly enough, the Grey Hulk's head shape is reminiscent of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster, while his behavior is more in line with a self-confident Mr. Hyde. The Savage Hulk, on the other hand, behaves like the aforementioned lonely, hunted Monster, but his head looks more 'human'.
  • The Grey Hulk seems to have the ability to drive a car.

Feats:

  • In his much weaker Grey Hulk form, busts apart an asteroid measured to be twice the size of the Earth.
    • The feat itself was calced at around 169.6940727 zettatons (Planet level).

In other media[]

Television[]

He appears in the cartoon series The Incredible Hulk (1996). In the story the characters thought they had removed Bruce Banner's radiation power and transferred it to his friend Rick. But when night fell he turned into the gray Hulk. There were episodes where he went back to being the normal Hulk, and the Green Hulk and the Gray Hulk fought in Bruce's mind for control of his body..

In an episode of the Ultimate Spider Man cartoon, Spider-Man returned to the Noir universe, and the Hulk of that world was Joe Fixit (instead of being a Bruce Banner who never became the Hulk). He was a criminal, Spiderman even dubbed the group the Hulk and Gangsters of SMASH (in a play on the fact that the connected cartoon: Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.).

Video games[]

In the video game based on The Super Hero Squad Show, a similar thing happened. In this case the fragment transformed the Hulk and at the same time sent him to another dimension. He was fighting the beings there and trying to get back home. This gray Hulk different from the cartoon accepted to fight. Hulk was back to normal as he left his place and landed near the squadron base.

In the online video game "Super Hero Squad Online", Joe Fixit is a character you can use to play. And he appears to be armed with a Gamma radiation weapon (since Marvel's tradition is that the color of Gamma radiation is green).

In many Hulk video games, he is usually locked behind a cheat code. An example being the 2003 game having you use the cheat code janitor to unlock him.

Notes[]

Banner's identity is publicly known; however, the public does not know Joe Fixit was the Hulk.

If Savage Hulk represents his inner child then Grey hulk represents his inner teen mind as devil hulk represents his inner evil.

He does not like beans as much as the savage green Hulk, but tends to eat chicken a lot more than other food.
